ABA Announces Public Sector Lawyer Scholarship

The ALRA membership has voted to support this initiative and is doing so by publicizing information about the scholarship.

The American Bar Association has announced the availability of a scholarship for governmental/public sector/agency-employed attorneys in support of on-going initiatives by the Section of Labor and Employment Law

The scholarship initiative is undertaken by the Section of Labor and Employment Law to attract young minority and women attorneys who would not otherwise be financially able to participate in ABA activitiesThe program will provide a financial subsidy for a neutral attorney, not representing an advocacy constituency, to attend and participate in the mid-winter meetings of the Section's Committee on State and Local Government Collective Bargaining and Employment Law for a period of three years.  This is the committee which examines and reports on the activities of state and local labor relations boards and their activities with public sector labor organizations and public sector management at the state, county, and local levels.  The Committee's 2006 mid-winter meeting is set for Riviera Maya, Mexico, from January 26 to January 28, 2006.

The scholarship envisions financial support to a neutral attorney:  1) who represents a non-advocacy constituency;  2) who would not otherwise be financially able to participate in ABA activities; 3) who exhibits an interest in labor and employment law in general and public sector labor law in particular; and 4) whose selection is consistent with the diversity initiatives of the Section.  Ideally, the successful candidate will have between two and five years of practice in the field of labor relations law.  The financial assistance is expected to reimburse the recipient for travel and hotel fees associated with attending the Committee's mid-winter meeting in Riviera Maya and its next two mid-winter meetings.

Applications should be completed by August  31, 2005, and sent to:  American Bar Association, Section of Labor and Employment Law, Attn:  Brad Hoffman, 321 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL  60610
